Exhibit 1 was established in 1990 by master gilder Ashley O'Grady and the business has won numerous industry awards for design, creativity and innovative finishing techniques. The business specialises in producing the very best hand made frames and also the gilding of picture frames, glass and unique furniture.
In our 4000 sq foot workshop we have made a big investment in timber profiling and finishing equipment which has enabled us to make unique frames for both mirrors and artwork to the highest standards. We offer almost any choice of timber from oak right through to Macassar ebony and a huge range of finishing techniques are available.
This unique approach to picture framing combined with our expert knowledge of archival and restorative processes to enhance and preserve valuable artwork means that we are able to produce any frame design for any artwork.
So whether you are looking for the clean lines of burnished Japanese lacquer, the beauty of wax polished natural wood or the elegance of antiqued water gilded gold leaf we have the skill, experience and passion to make the frame that's right for you.
Exhibit 1 based in Leeds believes, picture framing is as important to the visual impact of a work of art as the art itself and good picture framing should not only protect the artwork but also enhance the way a work of art is viewed. At Exhibit 1 museum standard framing is the standard that we work to as a matter of course and as we specialise in producing hand made frames it is a necessary requirement with much of the valuable artwork that we frame.
At Exhibit 1 a hand made frame starts with the careful selection of the appropriate timber. We regularly make frames in macassar ebony, wenge and bleached wenge, and if the frame is to be gilded we use either obeche, tulip or maple. The timber will often then be profiled on our moulding machine to either a stock profile or the clients own bespoke design. The frame will be carefully joined to form a strong mitre and then the frame is sanded with a range of graded sanding pads, if a natural timer frame has been chosen then it will sanded to the smoothest possible finish and then either a wax can be applied or it can go into our spray booth and have any finish from a wet look gloss to a 10% matt polyurethane lacquer. We have a large range of finishes - some traditional and others are innovative but however your frame is finished it will be done by an expert who is passionate about the industry we work in.
